Assignment 1

Welcome to our unit on Mediterranean Empires!

As previously discussed in class, we know that Greek Gods/Goddessess were created to explain the mysteries of nature and life.  The Greeks believed in these Gods/Goddessess to get a better understanding of things occuring in their daily life.

The History Channel gives a "crash course" on Greek Gods/Goddesses, you can take a look at that here Greek Gods/Goddesses.

Question:
From what we know about Greek Mythology, how are male characters (Gods) different from female characters (Goddesses)?

Using a Venn Diagram, compare and contrast the differences between female/male gods.  You should include characteristics including powers and status.

From the Venn diagram, you can begin to write a short paragraph.  I want you to pick one God or Goddess and write a paragraph about what you think the lesson is that each God/Goddess is trying to teach and the impact of that God/Goddess through history.

If you need further information on Greek Gods/Goddesses, I have included an additional link with a lot of information.

  1. Great start on your blog Liz,
Embedding the link from the History Channel was a good strategy. It is simple and entertaining yet presents the basic facts regarding the Gods of Olympus in a clear and concise manner. It will serve as a good resoure for struggling readers or for students who need prior knowledge on the topic. You may want to expand on the first posting how you would like the students to answer your questions. For example: "Use a Ven Diagram to compare the male and female Gods" or "Choose one god or goddess and write a short paragraph to explain what you think they are trying to teach us." You have posed good questions for the students to answer but you need to give thm more structure and specific instructions as to how you want the responses.

  2. Your blog looks great Liz! I like how you chose the Greek Gods as your backround, just a liitle something to refer to as I am thinking of things to compare between the Gods. One suggestion that I have is to make the font larger, it is a liitle difficult to read. Your link is a great addition to your blog, especially for those who have dificulty reading content material.

    1. Thank you for the positive feedback! I adjusted the font on the page to make it bigger. I did not even realize how small it was until you mentioned it. I have also added another link including text about the gods/goddesses.

  3. This looks like a great blog. Its also a good question to ask because of the role in history that the gods had on acient Grecce. Maybe you could add one more video to assist the students in getting information about the Gods.

  5. Liz I think having the students use venn diamgrams to compare and constrast gods and goddess is a great way to help students activate prior knowlege to explain the male characteristics verses the female goddess characteristics.

    1. Thanks Rose. The venn diagram will also help students understand the relationships of the Gods and help them see their differences and similarities.

  7. Liz, I really enjoyed coming to your page and that your background makes sense to your topic. Maybe to capture their attention and to guide them in choosing a god/goddess, you could add a few pictures of a couple of them. I love your ideas though!

  8. Liz i love your Blog! My favorite part is the background. I like that you are having the students compare male and female gods! i would suggest that you have the students bring in the venn diagram in to school for homework, or show it to you in class just to assure that they are doing it and not taking the easy way out! Great job!
